The Nimrod League Newsletter
Summer, 2023 (June, July, Aug)
Update from June & July EBoard Meetings:
We are on our summer schedule and here is a brief update to the newsletter.
First and foremost, I am giving up the monthly newsletter and we still need someone to take over this duty. Please contact me ASAP so I can pass this enjoyable task on to someone who has fingers that work better than mine. I will give you any mentoring that you need so do not hesitate to take it on. Thank you.
To Everyone, please send me a note of any outdoor adventures you may have. Somebody must have got a BIG fish? We would love to have you regale us with your latest and greatest exploits. I will serve as editor and get your story into a presentable format, subject to your approval before publishing. Please email me, Chris Erali at eralic23@gmail.com with any tales.
Monthly Club Meetings are always the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Clubhouse. Our next General Club meeting will be Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Cocktails start at 6:00-6:15 PM followed by dinner somewhere between 6:45 & 7:00 PM Join us for the best $5 meal you can find, AND the 50/50 raffle!
For all our members, you do not have to be a gourmet serve as cook for a night. It is a great way to get your volunteer hours committed and there is plenty of appreciation for your efforts. Keep it simple and save your receipts. Chris Craigue can tell you how many to plan for serving. The attendance goes up for the member cooked nights so please consider it seriously? It is always great to see a crowd!

Secretary's and Treasurer's Reports
Maryanne gave her usual thorough run-through of past meeting details.
Cindy has kept track of our spending and kept our balances firmly in the minds of our executives on the board. The one major vote occurred over a month ago as the Eboard voted to move some of our funds from our investment account to cover some unforeseen expenses. Mainly we needed a check for our Forestry project. We need to pay before we get reimbursed. Imagine that? You can only get reimbursed if you pay first. Go figure? Anyway, the computer and paper work was done.

Monthly Safety Tip and Topic for Discussion
“Keep hands-off all firearms when anyone is downrange.”
This one is pretty basic, but it is really clear if you have ever been downrange putting up a target and you hear someone’s action slam closed. Your heart can go right to your throat!

Archery
Jason is willing to continue as archery co-chair with David Craigue as the new co-chair, but they need help. Volunteers are needed. Take a walk through the course. It is really extensive and nice! But like everything it needs maintenance. Too much for two people. “Many hands make light work.” Please let the Eboard know if you are willing to help.
Bar
All is well with the bar. I can personally vouch for the whiskey supply. Eric is doing a great job!
Birds
Birds are growing and eating and growing and eating and growing and eating... Did I mention that the young pheasants are growing and eating?
Board of Trustees
Auditing for all committees is being shared by the trustees. The audit is ongoing.

Executive Board
This month’s meeting adjourned at 0:?? PM. We aim for the newsletter to convey the highlights.
We are on our Summer Schedule and meet as needed after our regular monthly meeting. Necessary votes are taken digitally via email.
Otherwise, EBoard meetings are held at 7 PM the last Tuesday of the month. Members are welcome if you would like to come and observe our club’s operation. Our membership can be proud of the board and the time and effort that is made by everyone to keep our club running smoothly. Member concerns are always addressed. Many times, one board member will inform others that a single club member voiced a certain matter that he/she found troubling. Our club can rest assured that any points brought up by a member are ALWAYS brought to the attention of the entire board.

Finances
The market fluctuates as we all know. Smart investors stay the course.
Fund Raising
There is some talk of possibly doing another gun raffle. Please somebody offer to chair this! We love gun raffles!
This is a good gig because if you hold one successful fund raiser, you’ll be a hero! AND your hours will be complete for the year! We don’t have any scheduled, so the calendar is open for your ideas.

Grounds
The property looks good as our new Grounds Chair begins his tenure. Please allow me to pitch volunteerism. Members can help out anytime. Take ownership of one small part of property. Maybe you only use a string trimmer around the arborvitae lining the lawn, but that’s a start. It only takes a few minutes. Pull weeds out of one part of the flower beds. Again, don’t feel like you have to take on the whole job. Do 3 feet one time and 3 more on your next visit. A string-trimming and weed-pulling are invaluable to keep our property in great shape! Make a visit once a week. We don’t need a “work day” if we just “keep at it” a little at a time. If everyone in our membership gave 10 minutes a week, the property would look pristine! Thanks!
House
Things have been quiet. The rifle range renovation continues and shows progress. We still have a ways to go!
Ice Fishing
The August nights have started to cool down. It won’t be long before John Meyer starts getting excited.
Kitchen
Bruce Ebbeson is cooking this month. We are always looking for cooks for our monthly meetings. Please let Chris Craigue know as soon as possible if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you.
Land Use
Our Forestry project will take place north of the power lines, and we will reap any proceeds from the sale of some of the wood. We have a Bird Habitat grant coming through the DCR.
Membership
Our membership is growing! Paul Powers and Brian Heuson have been added to the rolls. This past month we added Val Percuoco from Hudson and Ed Sanabria of Princeton. We can expect more as our range nears completion and hunting season gets closer. Thank you to Kevin Newell for keeping us informed.

Rifle Range
The Range is still open as long as the construction isn’t taking place. There are tables, one on the pistol side, and one on the rifle side, but that’s it. Hopefully, our plans will come to fruition. We will have a beautification project of the site, but in the meantime don’t hesitate to take a moment to pick up and pile some stones or brush on the front-side of the wall. Leave some room for Kevin to get the tractor in and around to pick up or move, but take a few minutes after picking up your brass and start a pile of stones or brush. Make sure there is room on all sides of the pile to get the tractor in. One piece of brush or a couple of stones grabbed by everyone using the range can show progress very quickly. Thank you. We love to see members showing ownership of our property.
I seem to be editorializing a bit this month, so I guess I'll keep going. Allow me to continue… I just purchased a new rifle so I shall be trying out our new range soon. I was reviewing a couple of different websites to refresh my knowledge of Range Etiquette. One particularly caught my eye, so I’ll repeat it here:
Rule: Do not handle guns in the parking area. Bring all firearms (preferably cased) to the range tables before handling. Make sure all firearms are safely pointed downrange.
I have to confess I haven’t always done this. I have on occasion left my case in my truck.
The thinking here is again treating all firearms as though they are loaded, and also to emphasize the DOWNRANGE aspect as the only safe place to have them pointing. The parking lot can make for a “show and tell” session that induces carelessness with regard to a safe direction. Thanks, and a quick search online can give anyone numerous lists of range etiquette that can serve as a good refresher. See you, on the range!

Trap/Skeet
The league is going well. Attendance has been a little sparse overall. Please note a thought under “New Business” regarding perhaps changing the day.
Remember, Trap and Skeet is every Thursday night at 6:00 PM and is open to the public. And we have ammunition available to purchase. Invite a friend and join us for a night of shooting and camaraderie.

Worcester County League of Sportsmen
One recent meeting was at the Fox and Coon Club. State staffing is 30-70% short. We are looking for volunteers for Hunter Safety classes.

Good and Welfare
Maryanne Lane is recovering from surgery for a broken leg after taking a tumble on some stairs.
Get well soon, Maryanne! As they say in the dog world, “HEAL!”
Please, if you have some news that you would like to have included in this section, good or bad, contact any member of the Executive Board and we will see that it is included.
